Smriti Irani has shared a strong message about online behaviour, calling for greater kindness and accountability on social media. Through a recent post, she reflected on the growing culture of trolling and questioned why public figures are often expected to silently endure personal attacks in the digital space.
Sharing a video featuring Ritu Chaudhary, Raave Gupta, and Gauri Pradhan, Smriti accompanied it with a detailed note highlighting the difference between constructive criticism and online cruelty.
Smriti On Social Media Responsibility:
In her note, Smriti acknowledged the positive impact of social media in giving people a platform to express themselves. “Social media has democratised the right to be heard. It has given a voice to millions who may otherwise never have had one. But somewhere along the way, some began to mistake that freedom for a licence to hurt, humiliate and dehumanise,” she wrote.
She stressed that while open conversations and diverse opinions are important, personal attacks should not become an accepted part of online discourse.
Questioning The Culture Of Trolling:
Smriti also addressed a common belief that public figures should simply accept trolling as part of their profession. “Those in public life are often told that this simply comes with the territory — ‘put up or shut up.' But should it?” she wrote.
She questioned why choosing a life in the public eye should mean losing the right to basic dignity and respect. According to Smriti, disagreement and criticism are natural elements of any democratic conversation, but humiliation should never be normalised.
A Call For Kindness Online:
Further elaborating on her views, Smriti highlighted how social media anonymity sometimes encourages people to make hurtful remarks without considering their impact. “Why should stepping into public life mean stepping away from the right to dignity?” she asked.
She went on to write, “‘Mera handle, meri opinion' cannot become a fig leaf for cruelty.” The statement resonated with many users online, as she emphasised the need to separate criticism from personal attacks.
Remember The Human Behind The Screen:
Concluding her message, Smriti encouraged people to continue expressing their opinions, debating, questioning, and challenging ideas, but with empathy and respect. She reminded social media users that there is always a real person receiving those comments and messages.
Highlighting the lasting impact of words shared online, Smriti ended her note with a simple yet powerful appeal: “Be kind. It doesn't take much. But sometimes, it can mean more than you will ever know.” Her message has sparked conversations about digital responsibility and the importance of maintaining basic human decency in an increasingly polarized online world.
