Dreaming of launching your own food brand but worried about funding? From homemade snacks and packaged foods to beverage brands and small cafés, starting a food business often requires significant capital. However, a government-backed scheme is helping thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs turn their ideas into reality with financial support and subsidies.
Finance influencer CA Sarthak Ahuja recently highlighted the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme, which aims to support individuals looking to enter the food processing sector.
What Is The PMFME Scheme?
The PMFME Scheme was launched to encourage micro food processing businesses across India. It offers financial assistance to entrepreneurs who want to start or expand ventures related to food production, packaging, processing, and value-added food products.
According to information shared by CA Sarthak Ahuja, applicants are required to contribute only 10% of the total project cost. The remaining amount can be financed through a bank loan under eligible credit schemes.
This significantly lowers the financial burden for first-time entrepreneurs and allows them to focus on building and scaling their businesses.
How The Subsidy Works:
One of the biggest highlights of the PMFME Scheme is the government subsidy. Eligible applicants can receive a credit-linked subsidy of up to 35% of the project cost, subject to a maximum limit of Rs 10 lakh.
For many small entrepreneurs, this subsidy can considerably reduce repayment obligations and improve the viability of their business plans.
The scheme covers a wide range of food-related ventures, including packaged snacks, spice units, beverage businesses, bakery products, cafés, and other food processing enterprises.
Additional Benefits For Entrepreneurs:
CA Sarthak Ahuja also pointed out that entrepreneurs may combine the PMFME Scheme with the Agriculture Infrastructure Finance Scheme to unlock additional advantages.
Under this arrangement, applicants may be eligible for an interest subvention of up to 3%, helping lower borrowing costs. In certain eligible cases, entrepreneurs can also benefit from reduced collateral requirements, making access to finance easier.
These combined benefits can provide a strong foundation for small businesses looking to enter a competitive market.
Growing Interest Across India:
The scheme has already seen significant participation across the country. As per reported figures shared by CA Sarthak Ahuja, more than 1.4 lakh applications have been approved under the PMFME Scheme.
With rising demand for packaged and processed foods, the initiative is creating opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs to formalise their businesses and expand operations.
For those interested in applying, details are available on the PMFME portal, making it easier than ever to explore government support for a food business venture.
