What is E85 Fuel? Here's Why It's Cheaper but Not Ideal for Every Car

Finance influencer CA Sarthak Ahuja shares an important update that could impact every vehicle owner in India: the introduction of E85 fuel at petrol stations. Priced around Rs 20 cheaper per litre than regular petrol, this new fuel blend contains 85% ethanol and only 15% petrol. While it may sound like a cost-saving option at first glance, there's more to it than just a lower price tag.

Understanding the Cost vs Mileage Equation:

One of the biggest factors to consider is mileage. Ethanol has a lower energy output compared to petrol, nearly 30% less. This directly impacts fuel efficiency, bringing down mileage by roughly 20%. In simple terms, while you may pay less per litre, your car will consume more fuel over the same distance. This means the overall cost per kilometre may not significantly reduce, making it crucial for consumers to look beyond just pump prices.

Why the Government Is Promoting E85:

The move towards ethanol-blended fuel is driven by three major goals: reducing oil imports, saving foreign exchange, and promoting cleaner energy. India currently has underutilised ethanol production capacity, and shifting towards blends like E85 can help improve fuel availability while lowering dependency on crude oil. Additionally, ethanol emits fewer pollutants, making it a more environmentally sustainable option in the long run.

Not Meant for Every Vehicle:

A key point highlighted is that E85 is not suitable for all cars. Using it in regular petrol vehicles can lead to engine issues over time, as most engines are not designed to handle such high ethanol content. To address this, automakers are gradually introducing flex-fuel vehicles that are compatible with ethanol blends. Brands like Maruti Suzuki and others are already working on models that can safely run on E85.

Global Success and India's Road Ahead:

Countries like Brazil have successfully adopted ethanol-based fuels, using domestically produced ethanol to power vehicles. India aims to replicate a similar model, but the transition will take time. For now, consumers need to stay aware and cautious. The introduction of E85 is a step towards future-ready fuel solutions, but its benefits will depend on the right vehicle compatibility and informed decision-making by users.
