- GST refunds on input services from Nov 1, 2026
- Group health insurance GST credit may reduce tax liability
- New GST rules could improve cash flow for SMEs and startups
For many business owners, GST compliance often feels like a task focused on taxes and paperwork. But upcoming GST changes could have a real impact on cash flow, operating costs and overall business efficiency. Finance influencer Anushka Rathod recently highlighted key GST updates that entrepreneurs, startups and SMEs should keep on their radar.
Approved by the GST Council, the proposed changes are aimed at providing relief to businesses through expanded refund benefits and additional input tax credit opportunities.
Refunds On Input Services Get A Boost:
One of the biggest changes relates to refunds under the inverted duty structure. Earlier, businesses could claim refunds only on excess GST paid on inputs such as raw materials. However, GST paid on input services like rent, advertising, transportation and professional fees generally remained blocked from refund claims. Under the new recommendation, businesses will be able to claim refunds on eligible input services from November 1, 2026.
This change could significantly improve liquidity for companies where the GST rate on raw materials is higher than the GST rate on the final product. As a result, businesses may be able to recover money that would otherwise remain locked in their GST credit balance.
Health Insurance Tax Credit Brings Savings:
Another noteworthy update involves group health insurance provided to employees. Previously, businesses generally faced restrictions in claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC) on such expenses. Under the proposed changes, eligible businesses may be able to claim GST credit on group health insurance premiums.
For example, if a company pays a premium of ₹1 lakh and incurs GST of ₹18,000, this amount can potentially be offset against its GST liability, subject to eligibility requirements. The result is a lower tax burden and improved cost efficiency for employers. For businesses with large workforces, the savings could be substantial over time.
Important Dates To Remember:
Business owners should note the timelines attached to these changes. Refund eligibility for input services will apply to eligible credits availed on or after November 1, 2026. Refund benefits related to plant and machinery are expected to apply from April 1, 2027. Most of the remaining GST-related amendments are also set to take effect from April 1, 2027.
Why These Changes Matter:
According to finance experts, these reforms could provide meaningful relief for small and medium-sized enterprises. Better refund access, improved ITC benefits and stronger cash flow management can help businesses reinvest funds, manage expenses more efficiently and support long-term growth.
For entrepreneurs, the message is simple: understanding these GST updates today could help unlock financial advantages tomorrow.
