Highlights
  • Caller names to appear on unknown calls from November 1
  • New feature aims to curb spam and financial fraud
  • Experts warn that caller ID is not a guarantee of safety

How many times have you ignored an unknown call, only to wonder later if it was important? Starting November 1, mobile users may get an extra layer of information before answering. Telecom operators are set to display the caller's registered name along with the phone number on supported 4G and 5G networks, a move aimed at improving transparency and combating spam calls.

Finance influencer CA Sakchi Jain recently highlighted the update, noting that while it could make communication safer, users should not assume every identified caller is genuine.

What Is Changing From November 1?

Under the new caller identification system, users will be able to see the name registered with the caller's telecom operator, even if the number is not saved in their contacts. For international numbers, the display is expected to show "International Call."

The feature is designed to help mobile users quickly identify who may be calling and make informed decisions before picking up.

A Step Towards Fighting Financial Fraud:

The introduction of caller name display comes at a time when cybercrime and financial fraud cases continue to rise. Fraudsters frequently pose as bank officials, insurance agents, telecom executives, income tax officers, or government representatives to trick victims into revealing sensitive information.

By displaying a registered caller name, authorities hope to make it harder for anonymous scam callers to exploit unsuspecting users. Consumers may find it easier to distinguish genuine calls from suspicious ones, especially when receiving unexpected communication related to banking, loans, KYC updates, investments, or tax refunds.

A Name On Screen Doesn't Guarantee Safety:

CA Sakchi Jain stresses that users should remain cautious despite the new feature. A caller ID can provide useful context, but it should never be treated as proof of authenticity.

Scammers may still attempt social engineering tactics to gain trust. If someone claiming to be from a bank, RBI, a government office, or a financial institution asks for OTPs, PINs, passwords, or payment details, it should immediately raise a red flag. Consumers should independently verify such requests through official customer care numbers or company websites before taking any action.

Stay Alert, Stay Protected:

The caller name display feature could significantly reduce uncertainty around unknown calls and help users identify potential spam more easily. However, combating financial fraud still requires vigilance.

The safest approach is to treat the displayed name as a helpful clue, not a guarantee. In an era of increasingly sophisticated scams, awareness and verification remain your strongest financial defence.
