What Is Vrat?

A vrat is not merely a fast; it is regarded as a sacred inner discipline in the Dharma Shastras and Puranas. Fasting turns into a means of spiritual concentration and self-purification during Shravan, the month of Lord Shiva. Every vrat has a deeper meaning, ranging from karmic weight removal to mental fortification.

Somvar And Pradosh Vrat

On Mondays (July 14, 21, 28, and August 4), people observe Somvar Vrat, a festival honoring Lord Shiva that promotes inner strength, concentration, and emotional equilibrium. During the twilight of Trayodashi, Pradosh Vrat is observed between July 22 and August 6 with the intention of karmic cleansing and eradicating previous bad deeds. Through focused dedication, both vrats increase spiritual awareness and bring the practitioner closer to higher consciousness.

Shravan Shivratri, Mangala Gauri and Naag Panchami Vrat

On July 23, Shravan Shivratri is a potent night for profound spiritual development and establishing a silent, meditative connection with Lord Shiva. The Goddess Parvati is the object of the Mangala Gauri Vrat, which is celebrated on Tuesdays (July 15, 22, 29, and August 5) and bestows blessings for marital harmony, strength, and protection. On July 29, Naag Panchami Vrat celebrates serpent energies, which stand for kundalini force and respect for ancestors.

Sattvic Simplicity

It is recommended to have a light, sattvic supper before sunset on the day before the vrat. Preparing the body for energy sensitivity involves avoiding tamasic foods like garlic, onions, and processed or extremely spicy foods. The tone for a focused and disciplined day is set by this pre-fast meal.

Breaking The Fast

Break the fast mindfully once the sun has set or the puja is finished. Simple, warm, and easily digestible food, such as khichdi, fruit bowls, or light sabzi with roti, should be served after a fast. It is also an opportunity to stop and consider the small changes that the vrat brought about, such as increased commitment, mental clarity, or emotional serenity.
