Highlights
  • Rustic Ride, Real Speed
  • DIY Railway Etiquette
  • Scenic & Sunny Routes

If you've ever wondered what it actually feels like to ride on a bamboo platform fully powered by a motorbike engine at around 40 km/h, Ankita Kumar's recent travel adventure takes you straight into the heart of Cambodia on the much iconic Bamboo Train, also well-known as the Norry.

Originally built after the Khmer Rouge era to easily transport people and goods when railway systems were often destroyed, these makeshift trains were very ingeniously crafted using the leftover truck parts, motorbike engines, and some bamboo planks.

Locals topped them with some mats and pillows for sheer comfort and used them for their everyday commute. Today, while they are no longer part of the main transportation system, they've indeed become a must-do tourist experience in the Battambang.

In her witty signature storytelling style, Ankita briefly shares how these trains may look much rustic but pack up speed, reaching up to 40 km/h. The experience deeply includes spontaneous stops for the animals, pedestrians, and even disassembly if a real train approaches. If the two Norries meet, the one with the fewer passengers must dismantle and then give way!

Tourists can take upto 20–30 minutes round trip for just Rs. 400, with only two route options:

A direct ride through the sunny paddy fields

Or the more scenic path through the villages, bridges, and the bustling towns, which Ankita highly recommends!

Calling it “AMAZING fun,” Ankita strongly emphasizes how this ride offers much more than just a thrill. it's also a mere slice of Cambodia's past, present, and the local ingenuity.

Thus,

Whether you're a constant thrill-seeker or a culture lover, the Bamboo Train is a must-do thing in Cambodia.

Thanks to the explorers like Ankita Kumar, we're strongly reminded how offbeat travel often offers one of the most unforgettable stories.
