  • Ram Ki Paidi to glow with millions of diyas

Ayodhya is preparing for one of its biggest celebrations of the year as the city gets ready to host the 10th edition of Deepotsav ahead of Diwali 2026. Known as the birthplace of Lord Ram, Ayodhya holds a special place in the story behind the festival. According to the Ramayana, the people of Ayodhya welcomed Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman back from exile by lighting rows of diyas, a tradition that continues to inspire Diwali celebrations across India.

This year, Deepotsav celebrations are scheduled from November 5 to November 8, with the grand lamp-lighting ceremony taking place on November 7.

Deepotsav Brings Ayodhya To Life:

The highlight of the celebrations is Deepotsav, when the city transforms into a dazzling sea of lights. The main festivities take place at Ram Ki Paidi along the banks of the Sarayu River, where thousands of earthen lamps illuminate the ghats.

Visitors can also witness cultural performances, devotional events, grand aartis and modern attractions such as drone shows and light displays. The event has earned recognition over the years for its large-scale diya-lighting ceremonies, drawing pilgrims and travellers from across the country.

Ram Janmabhoomi Remains The Spiritual Heart:

A visit to Ayodhya during Diwali is incomplete without seeking blessings at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. Dedicated to Lord Ram, the temple has become one of India's most visited pilgrimage destinations since the consecration of Ram Lalla in 2024.

During the festive season, the temple complex is adorned with decorations and attracts thousands of devotees hoping to celebrate Diwali in the city most closely associated with the epic Ramayana.

Sacred Sites Worth Visiting:

Apart from Ram Janmabhoomi, Ayodhya is home to several significant religious landmarks. Hanuman Garhi, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, remains a major attraction for devotees seeking blessings and panoramic views of the city. Kanak Bhavan, associated with Lord Ram and Goddess Sita, is known for its beautiful architecture and spiritual atmosphere.

Dashrath Mahal, believed to be linked to King Dashrath and the royal family of Ayodhya, also draws pilgrims throughout the year. For those interested in history beyond religious tourism, Gulab Bari in nearby Faizabad offers a glimpse into Awadh's architectural heritage.

Planning Your Journey:

Ayodhya is accessible through Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, which connects the city to major destinations. Travellers can also reach the city through Ayodhya Dham Junction and Ayodhya Cantt railway stations.

Those planning a road trip can travel from Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Gorakhpur. However, visitors are advised to make travel and accommodation arrangements early, as large crowds are expected during Deepotsav.

For travellers looking to experience Diwali in its most culturally significant setting, Ayodhya's Deepotsav offers a unique blend of faith, tradition, history and celebration.
