- 48-hour free cancellation for safer bookings
- 24-hour free name correction for typos
- Faster refunds with strict timelines
Finance influencer Monica Malik shares how the DGCA's new air‑travel rules, effective March 26, 2026, are set to redefine the way Indians book flights by protecting money, reducing penalties, and ensuring faster refunds. These updates act like a financial safety net for travellers, giving them room to correct mistakes and secure their funds without unnecessary losses.
1. The 48‑Hour Money Safety Window:
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a 48‑hour penalty‑free cancellation and modification period. This means travellers can now cancel or change their booking within two days of purchase without paying cancellation charges. The only requirement is that the flight must be at least seven days away for domestic journeys and fifteen days away for international ones. Whether the plan suddenly shifts, prices drop, or you simply booked in a hurry, this window allows you to rethink your purchase without losing money. If you shift to another flight, you'll only need to pay the fare difference, no penalty added.
2. Free Name Corrections Within 24 Hours:
Typos in flight tickets used to be a costly nightmare. Now, the DGCA mandates that airlines must correct the passenger's name free of charge if the issue is reported within 24 hours of booking. This applies when tickets are booked directly on airline websites and ensures travellers aren't penalised for small, honest mistakes made during rushed bookings.
3. Strict Refund Deadlines to Protect Your Cashflow:
Refunds have historically been one of the biggest pain points for flyers. The new rules clearly define refund timelines, ensuring airlines return money promptly. Payments made through credit cards must be refunded within seven days, while cash bookings made at airline offices must be refunded immediately at the same location. For tickets booked through agents or travel portals, airlines must complete refunds within fourteen working days. Additionally, statutory taxes and passenger‑related charges must be refunded even if the base fare is non‑refundable, ensuring you don't lose money unfairly.
4. What This Means for Travellers' Finances:
These reforms collectively give travellers more control over their money. From error‑free bookings to guaranteed refund timelines, the DGCA has finally created a system that prioritises transparency and consumer protection. Travellers can now book with confidence, knowing their money is safer than ever before.
