If you have oily skin, chances are you're doing some things to manage it. But did you know certain habits might actually be making your skin worse? Dr. Saru Singh, a skin & hair health expert, highlights three common mistakes people with oily skin should avoid.
1. Overdoing Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera gel has a reputation for calming skin, but it can sometimes hurt more than help if you don't use it right. These days most aloe vera gels have fillers, scents, and other chemicals that might upset your skin. Even pure aloe vera from the plant can be too strong for some people causing allergies or making skin sensitive. Rather than depending on aloe vera gel, try other products made just for oily skin to keep your skin in good shape and relaxed.
2. Washing Your Face Too Often
Although it may seem tempting to wash your face several times a day in an attempt to get rid of extra oil, doing so can actually cause your skin to create more oil. Your skin goes into overdrive in an attempt to replenish the moisture lost when you wash too often, stripping it of its natural oils. Breakouts and other skin problems may result from this increased oil production. For optimal effects, wash your face just twice a day, in the morning and right before bed.
3. Overuse of Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is also used to treat oily skin, but excessive usage of it is actually against its benefits. Dr. Saru Singh does not recommend using salicylic acid more than twice in a day. Try to use it only twice in a week. Using too much of it may irritate your skin and dry it out, which in turn may increase oiliness. Keep the balance going and use products that have salicylic acid content sparingly.
Avoid these frequent blunders to achieve healthy, balanced skin. A straightforward and regular skincare regimen is your best friend. Remember, less is often more when it comes to oily skin care!
