"Water, water everywhere, and yet your body is running dry. The rain is fooling your brain and your body is paying the price." Health expert Pooja Makhija makes this powerful statement describing how many people become dehydrated during the rainy season. During monsoon, our brain tends to be misleading. We get rain and cool air everywhere, and our brain thinks we are well hydrated. But that's not how our body functions.

How Your Brain Gets Tricked

Our brain functions like a thermostat. During summer, when we sweat, it understands we need water. But during the monsoon, the humid and cooler weather reduces sweat and thirst signals. That means you won't feel thirsty, although your body still requires fluids.

What's Really Happening Inside

Just because it's raining doesn't mean your body is hydrated. Humidity reduces the rate of sweat evaporation, and therefore you lose water silently. You continue to pee, and with that, you lose electrolytes as well. Symptoms like fatigue, lethargy, cravings for food, and constipation can all be signs of mild dehydration.

Simple Tips to Stay Hydrated

You don't have to wait until you feel thirsty. Hydration is more about supporting your body to do its best. Experiment with putting a water bottle on your desk so you can see it. Also, make it a routine—have a few sips every time you check Instagram or any other app that you check a lot.

Bonus Tip: Better Water

For better hydration, put a slice of lemon and a pinch of rock salt in your water. It provides necessary electrolytes and makes your body absorb the water better.
