A unique travel and heritage series is shining a spotlight on India's lesser-known Jain legacy through the eyes of Gen Z creator Divya. Titled "JAINZ: THE INDIA YOU DIDN'T KNOW", the project follows an eight-day journey across eight sacred Jain sites, uncovering stories, architecture and traditions that remain largely unknown to mainstream travellers.
Timed around the holy festival of Paryushan, the series explores how India's rich Jain heritage is woven into the country's cultural and historical fabric.
Journey Across Sacred Sites:
For the series, Divya travelled across multiple states, visiting some of the most significant yet lesser-explored Jain pilgrimage destinations. What began as a spiritual journey soon transformed into a discovery of hidden histories and forgotten narratives.
Among the revelations was the strong Jain connection to Varanasi, where four Tirthankaras are believed to be associated with the ancient city. The journey also took Divya to Shravanabelagola, home to the towering 57-foot Bahubali statue, one of the most iconic monuments in Jainism.
Each destination offered a new perspective on India's religious and cultural diversity.
Architecture And Legends:
The series also delves into the architectural brilliance of Jain temples. At Ranakpur, Divya explored the world-famous temple known for its 1,444 intricately carved pillars, each said to feature a unique design.
Another memorable stop was Kesariyaji, where an ancient idol continues to inspire multiple interpretations and beliefs among devotees. Through these visits, the series showcases not only the grandeur of Jain architecture but also the fascinating stories attached to these sacred spaces.
Discovering Forgotten Histories:
One of the most striking aspects of the journey was the realization that many locals were unaware of the Jain heritage surrounding them. The series highlights how centuries-old stories often remain hidden in plain sight despite their historical significance.
Rather than presenting herself as an expert, Divya approaches each destination with curiosity, allowing viewers to learn alongside her. This Gen Z perspective adds a fresh and relatable dimension to the exploration of faith, history and culture.
Beyond Tourism:
More than a travel series, "JAINZ: THE INDIA YOU DIDN'T KNOW" combines spirituality, heritage, architecture and storytelling. From climbing nearly 10,000 steps at Girnar to uncovering stories lost to time, the journey offers a deeper understanding of India's diverse legacy.
The larger takeaway is simple yet powerful. Divya set out to visit eight sacred places during Paryushan but returned with a newfound appreciation for an India she never knew existed.
