If you're planning a trip to Meghalaya and love discovering the offbeat, and soul-soothing destinations, Amit's latest travel find is one that you shouldn't really miss: Mawsawa Waterfall, a much serene and relatively unexplored gem perfectly tucked away near the very famous Mawsawdong Falls, just off the Shillong–Sohra route.
Once you take the final detour at Mawmihthied village toward the Mawkma, the road winds through the quiet countryside. About 15 minutes before reaching the falls, you'll need to trek through a pretty much scenic forest trail.
It's not too much difficult, but Amit suggests wearing some proper trekking shoes, especially during the intense rainy season, when the rocks can be much slippery and the current too strong.
As you are near the waterfall, the sound of water grows even more louder, and then it finally appears: a clean, cascading fall pouring into a much shallow pool of some crystal-clear water, surrounded by the thick green foliage.
The spot is very ideal for a much refreshing dip, a moment of stillness, or simply soaking in the natural beauty away from the busy tourist crowds.
What makes Mawsawa even better?
It's very less crowded than the more popular falls, making it a very peaceful alternative for all nature lovers. At the main entrance, you might find some local stalls selling chai, snacks, and some hot Maggi, a comforting treat in Meghalaya's pretty cool weather.
Whether you're a regular trekker, a nature photographer, or just someone seeking for a tranquil beauty off the beaten path, Mawsawa Waterfall is indeed a worth-visit.
Pack a towel, some dry clothes, and your most adventurous spirit, and thank Amit later on.
Highlights:
- Located near the Mawsawdong Falls, accessible via a much short 15-minute forest trek.
- Safe and scenic, perfect for a dip or even a picnic, but be cautious during the monsoons.
- Local snack stalls near the trail entrance perfectly enhance the experience with a tea and some noodles.
