RJ Princy Gets Candid On Content Creation, Poetry, And Directing Her First Short Film 'Bhram': Exclusive

What happens when a moment of silence says more than a room full of words? For RJ Princy, the inspiration behind her debut short film 'Bhram' came from exactly such a moment. Known for her relatable content, poetry, and radio journey, Princy has now stepped into filmmaking with a story that challenges the illusion of being indispensable. In this candid conversation with Jayveer Singh, she opens up about the personal experience behind 'Bhram', the leap from short-form content to cinema, and why conviction matters more than perfection.

What inspired you to make 'Bhram' as your first short film?

The story of Bhram comes from a personal experience. I attended the funeral of a friend's mother, and while everyone was talking about themselves, what would happen to them without her, who would take care of the children, and how empty the house would feel, no one spoke about her. When someone asked about her dreams or hobbies, there was complete silence.

That silence stayed with me. It made me realize how easily we forget the person behind the responsibilities. We often believe that everything depends on us, and that thought itself is Bhram, an illusion. I wanted to tell a story that reminds people not to lose themselves while taking care of everyone else.

Nitya's story is very relatable. What message do you hope viewers take away?

On the surface, it encourages people to love themselves. On a deeper level, it asks viewers to reflect on the illusion of being too important and being irreplaceable.

How different was directing or creating 'Bhram' compared to making short-form content?

Making short-form content is fun. It still requires effort, from scripting to execution, but it is much quicker than making a short film. A short film is a completely different journey. The script goes through countless rewrites, and finding the right team is just as important. Every actor, cinematographer, DOP, editor, musician, and singer needs to understand the story and the emotions behind it.

Once the storyboard, props, and lights are ready, the real work begins. Bhram took around 10 days to write and finalize the cast and their schedules. It took two days to shoot, with 14-hour stretches that included late-night schedules. Apart from that, filmmaking is an expensive business. It requires a great deal of faith in your story to invest the money needed to bring it to life.

You've successfully balanced radio, poetry, and digital content. Which medium feels most personal to you?

I'm an artist, and I genuinely love and appreciate every form of art. Radio, poetry, and digital content each have a special place in my life. Every medium has taught me something different and has played a role in shaping who I am today.

Radio helped me discover my humorous side, poetry became my way of expressing deep emotions, and digital content is something I truly enjoy creating. All three are equally close to my heart. However, performing on stage and directing a film feel the most personal to me.

How do you keep your content authentic while staying relevant to changing trends?

In my daily life, I love observing people and their behaviour. Most of my content comes from these observations, which is why it feels personal and authentic. I cannot create a good reel if it does not come from personal experience or observation.

When it comes to trends, I do not follow every trend. I only choose the ones where I can add my own touch by blending in my characters, humour, and storytelling style.

What's your process for turning everyday moments into engaging content?

To write or create something meaningful, you first need to have something within you. Only then can you create content that connects with people. That's why I read a lot, whether it's books, newspapers, or value-driven content.

As I mentioned earlier, I love observing people and their behaviour, and I practice writing every day. All of this helps me create engaging, authentic, and relatable content.

What's one creative risk you've taken that completely changed your career?

Transitioning from being a radio jockey to becoming a full-time content creator, and renting my own apartment where I can peacefully think, write, and shoot content, was the biggest risk I took. It completely changed my career.

If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring content creators, what would it be?

No matter how silly your idea may seem, share it with full conviction. Just go for it. It's okay if your videos are blurry, the angles aren't perfect, or you're full of self-doubt. Just start.

Once you begin, you'll learn along the way. Conviction is the most important part.
