Rubina Dilaik has opened up about her evolving relationship with food, revealing why she moved away from vegetarianism and eventually embraced a pescatarian lifestyle. She shared that her dietary choices have been shaped by her upbringing, personal research and changing nutritional needs, especially after becoming a mother.
Speaking candidly about her journey, Rubina explained that she has experienced different phases when it comes to food and wellness, trying to understand what works best for her body.
Vegetarian Roots:
Rubina revealed that she comes from a family that follows a strictly vegetarian lifestyle. Although she had included non-vegetarian food in her diet at one point due to travel and convenience, she later returned to vegetarianism for several years.
She shared that she stopped eating non-vegetarian food completely for nearly five years. Rubina admitted that her upbringing played a major role in shaping her perspective toward food and influenced her decision to avoid meat.
Influence Of Upbringing:
Discussing the emotional and psychological impact of food choices, Rubina explained that she often felt conflicted about consuming animal-based products because of her environment while growing up.
She said, “Because your upbringing and your environment are such that eating an animal is looked down upon.” Rubina added that she has always been curious about the relationship between food and overall well-being. Over the years, she studied how different foods affected her body and explored concepts such as rajasic, tamasic and sattvic diets.

Pregnancy Changed Everything:
Rubina revealed that her mindset shifted after pregnancy when she became more conscious of her nutritional requirements. She shared, “Then pregnancy happened, and after that I realised my protein intake was really negligible. It had gone down.” She said that motherhood prompted her to reassess her eating habits and focus more seriously on ensuring she consumed adequate nutrients.
Why She Chose Fish And Eggs:
While evaluating her diet, Rubina realised she was already consuming omega 3, 6 and 9 supplements along with fish oil capsules. This led her to rethink her food choices. She explained, “According to my research for myself, I realised that if I am taking omega 3, 6, 9 and fish oil tablets, why not? Can I also practise being a pescatarian?” Eventually, Rubina reintroduced fish and eggs into her diet, choosing a pescatarian lifestyle that better aligned with her nutritional goals.
Personal Choice Above All:
Rubina emphasised that her dietary decisions are based on personal research and individual needs rather than societal pressure. She also raised the question of whether it is possible to meet nutritional requirements while maintaining a vegetarian diet.
For Rubina, the journey has been about understanding her body's needs and making informed choices. Rather than following a diet because of external expectations or trends, she believes in finding a balance that supports both health and personal beliefs.
