  • Maharashtra Cyber issues summons, probe underway

Maharashtra Cyber has registered an FIR against stand-up comedian Pranit More and others following a controversy triggered by remarks made during one of his live shows in Gurugram. The case also names audience participant Himanshu Jangra and Dr Sejal Pawar, among others, over alleged objectionable content circulated online.

According to officials, the FIR has been filed at the Nodal Cyber Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000. The charges primarily relate to allegations of promoting obscene, offensive, and derogatory remarks concerning women, consent, and even deceased individuals.

Allegations of Objectionable Digital Content:

Authorities have stated that the controversial video was recorded, promoted, and widely circulated across social media platforms. Maharashtra Cyber claims that the dissemination of the clip appears to have been done deliberately to attract viewership and boost online engagement.

Officials further alleged that such content may have been monetised for financial gain, raising concerns about the ethics of digital content creation and the responsibilities of performers in public platforms. The incident has reignited debates around the boundaries of humour and accountability in the age of viral content.

About the Controversy:

The issue traces back to a segment of Pranit More's live show where an audience member, Himanshu Jangra, was invited to interact on stage. During the conversation, Jangra mentioned spending approximately Rs 370 on a biryani meal during a date.

However, the situation escalated when he implied that paying for the meal created an expectation of intimacy in return. This remark drew sharp criticism after the clip surfaced online, with many viewers accusing him of promoting a transactional and problematic view of relationships, particularly diminishing women's autonomy and consent.

Legal Action and Investigation Underway:

Following the backlash, Maharashtra Cyber initiated legal proceedings, issuing summons to Pranit More, Himanshu Jangra, and Dr Sejal Pawar. They have been directed to appear before the authorities to record their statements.

Officials have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and further action will be taken based on findings. The case highlights the growing scrutiny on public performances and online content, especially when it intersects with sensitive social issues.
