Many people use dietary supplements in their quest for better health and well-being. But even while these supplements might be beneficial, there could be unintended consequences, particularly for your skin. Renowned dermatologist Dr. Jushya Bhatia Sarin identifies three typical supplements that can make your acne worse.
Biotin: Frequently praised as the ideal vitamin for accelerating the growth of hair and nails, biotin can unintentionally cause severe skin damage. According to Dr. Sarin, consuming too much biotin can prevent the body from absorbing vitamin B5, which is essential for controlling the production of sebum on the skin and preserving the skin's barrier integrity.
Vitamin B12: Although necessary for many body processes, vitamin B12 might not always be good for your skin. Dr. Sarin cautions that this vitamin may change the protective milieu of the skin, which could lead to an environment that is conducive to the development of acne. Even while vitamin B12 has numerous health advantages, taking too much of it can unintentionally damage the clarity and complexion of your skin.
Protein Whey: Whey protein is a common diet staple for athletes and sports enthusiasts, and it has several advantages for both muscle growth and recovery. Dr. Sarin advises against using it carelessly, especially for those who are prone to acne. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) found in whey protein can increase the body's production of hormones and lipids.
Dr. Sarin notes that although these supplements might not cause acne in all people, they can undoubtedly make pre-existing skin conditions worse. It could be time to reevaluate your supplement intake if you've observed chronic acne despite your skincare regimen.
