As part of the Oriflame presents Whosthat360 Northeast Influencer Yatra, I, Jayveer Singh, Content Head at Whosthat360, found myself navigating stories, creators, and cultures across the Northeast. Amid packed schedules and constant movement, our visit to Umananda Temple in Guwahati became a rare pause, an experience that allowed the journey to slow down and the place to speak for itself.
Crossing the Brahmaputra:
Reaching Umananda Temple itself feels ceremonial. The journey begins with a boat ride across the Brahmaputra River, one of India's most powerful and revered waterways. As the boat leaves the riverbank, the sounds of the city gradually soften. The stillness of the water, broken only by gentle ripples, creates a sense of calm even before the temple comes into view. Sitting on Peacock Island, Umananda rises quietly, unobtrusive yet commanding.

A Temple Steeped in History:
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Umananda Temple holds deep religious and historical significance. Believed to have been built in the 17th century during the Ahom reign, the temple has long been a spiritual anchor for devotees in Assam. The site is closely linked to ancient legends and is often described as one of the most sacred Shiva shrines of the region. The simplicity of the structure, paired with its age, gives the space a timeless presence.
Serenity Above the River:
What truly defines Umananda is its peaceful energy. Despite being positioned at the center of a flowing river, the temple feels shielded from urgency. The slow climb up stone steps, the ringing of temple bells, and the quiet prayers create an atmosphere of reflection. Visitors often pause, not out of obligation, but instinct.
A Moment of Stillness:
Umananda Temple offers more than visual beauty or historical importance. It offers stillness. Surrounded by water, wrapped in silence, and shaped by belief, it stands as a reminder that some places don't ask for attention; they simply hold space. In a journey filled with movement, Umananda remains a moment that invites you to stop.
