Siddhartha Joshi had the honor of watching a Thirayattam performance in the Malabar region of Kerala recently. This unique form of dance is performed at sacred shrines and ancestral temples to invite the blessings of God. Siddhartha says the experience is both visually gratifying and spiritually enriching.
The Performance at Chettipurakandi Bhadrakali Temple
Siddhartha watched a Thirayattam performance at the Chettipurakandi Bhadrakali temple in Kozhikode city. The event started in the late afternoon with dancers playing the role of the snake god, Nagaraja, and his daughter, Nagakanya. The colorful rituals and the power of the performance filled the temple, and the audience was mesmerized by every movement. The whole experience was a perfect blend of tradition, spirituality, and devotion.
The Peak of the Performance
Siddhartha felt that the performance came to a head at around 4 AM when Nagakali, the supreme goddess, made her grand appearance. That atmosphere was electric as well, and the gathering was blessed by her presence, according to him. He says that the haunting drumming, chanting, and devotion of the performers affected him considerably.
How to Experience Thirayattam?
He mentions that it's not easy to find Thirayattam performances, since they are not always publicized. He recommends connecting with the local community for more information or checking the Kerala Tourism website's festival calendar. His friend helped him find the details of the performance in his case.
