Festivals are often remembered through the flavours they bring to the table, and Teej is no exception. From age-old family traditions to festive sweets prepared with love, the celebration is deeply rooted in culture and food. This Teej, food influencer Sneha Singhi is reviving a beloved traditional delicacy, sattu, with three delicious variations that are perfect for festive indulgence.
Teej is celebrated across states such as Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. The festival honours the divine bond between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is observed by married women who pray for a happy and strong relationship with their partners.
Traditional Favourite:
Sattu has long been an integral part of festive celebrations in many Indian households. Known for its rich texture and melt-in-the-mouth taste, the sweet is often prepared with simple pantry staples such as flour, roasted grains, sugar and ghee.
Sneha Singhi's take on the festive treat includes three distinctive versions: Besan Sattu, Atta Sattu and Rice Sattu, each bringing its own flavour and texture to the celebration table.
Besan Delight:
The Besan Sattu variation is prepared using roasted chana or horsegram, powdered sugar and melted ghee. The roasted chana is first ground into a fine powder before being mixed with sugar and ghee until glossy and smooth.
The mixture is then shaped as desired and garnished with silver vark, saffron and pistachios, creating a rich festive sweet that combines nutty flavours with traditional elegance.
Atta Goodness:
For those who enjoy earthy flavours, Atta Sattu offers a comforting alternative. The wheat flour is slowly roasted until fragrant and lightly browned, giving the sweet its distinctive aroma.
Once cooled, it is mixed with powdered sugar and ghee to create a smooth, rich mixture. The final touch comes from garnishing it with saffron, pistachios and silver vark, making it ideal for festive serving.
Rice Twist:
Adding a unique touch to the traditional recipe, Rice Sattu uses roasted rice that is ground into a fine powder. The roasted rice lends a delicate flavour and light texture to the sweet.
Combined with sugar and ghee, the mixture is shaped and decorated with saffron, almonds or pistachios and silver vark, making it both visually appealing and delicious.
Perfect Festive Treat:
Whether made with roasted chana, wheat flour or rice, these Teej-special sattu recipes celebrate tradition while offering variety for every palate. Thanks to Sneha Singhi's simple approach, these timeless sweets can easily become the highlight of your festive spread this Teej season.
