As March approaches, many individuals are looking for ways to optimize their tax savings. Srishti Gosavi, a renowned finance influencer, highlights the National Pension System (NPS) as an effective tool for tax savings and retirement planning.
Understanding NPS Tax Benefits:
Under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, you can claim a maximum deduction of Rs 1,50,000. NPS offers an additional benefit, allowing you to save an extra Rs 16,000 in taxes by providing a deduction amount of Rs 50,000. By investing Rs 50,000 annually in NPS, you can not only save on taxes but also build a substantial retirement fund.
Investing in NPS: Offline and Online Process
- Offline Process: To open an NPS account manually, locate a Point of Presence (PoP), which could be a bank registered with the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). Collect a subscriber form from the nearest PoP and submit it along with your KYC documents.
- Online Process: You can open an NPS account online in less than half an hour by visiting the eNPS portal (enps.nsdl.com). The process is streamlined if you link your account to your PAN, Aadhaar, and mobile number.
Types of NPS Accounts:
NPS offers two types of accounts: Tier I and Tier II. Tier I is the default account, while Tier II is voluntary. The Tier II account does not offer tax exemptions except for government employees and is primarily used for investment purposes rather than tax savings.
Asset Classes in NPS:
NPS allows investments in four asset classes:
- Equity (Class E)
- Corporate Bonds (Class C)
- Government Bonds (Class G)
- Alternate Assets (Class A)
NPS Customer Care:
For any queries or assistance regarding NPS, you can contact NPS customer care at 022-2499 3499 or 1800110708.
A Smart Investment for Tax Savings and Retirement
