- ₹4 crore can generate ₹1 lakh monthly income today
- Inflation can push the target corpus to ₹17.17 crore in 25 years
- A retirement calculator helps estimate the SIP needed to reach the goal
Many Indians dream of retiring with enough money to comfortably spend ₹1 lakh a month. But here's the catch: the amount needed to maintain that lifestyle keeps rising with inflation. What looks like an adequate retirement corpus today may fall significantly short in the future.
Finance influencer Udayan Adhye recently highlighted this reality using a retirement planning calculator based on the widely discussed 3% withdrawal rule. The exercise underscores a key lesson for investors: retirement is not just about the lifestyle you want, but also about when you plan to retire.
The ₹4 Crore Benchmark:
According to the 3% withdrawal rule, a person looking to generate roughly ₹1 lakh per month in retirement today would require a starting corpus of around ₹4 crore. The rule assumes retirees withdraw about 3% of their portfolio annually to help preserve capital over the long term.
However, this figure applies only if retirement begins today.
Inflation Changes Everything:
Inflation steadily increases the cost of living, making future retirement significantly more expensive. Assuming annual inflation of 6%, the retirement corpus required to support the same lifestyle rises dramatically over time.
The estimates show:
- ₹5.35 crore if retirement is 5 years away
- ₹7.16 crore if retirement is 10 years away
- ₹9.59 crore if retirement is 15 years away
- ₹12.83 crore if retirement is 20 years away
- ₹17.17 crore if retirement is 25 years away
Despite the growing corpus, each amount is designed to fund the equivalent of spending ₹1 lakh per month in today's terms.
How The Calculator Can Help:
The retirement calculator factors in an individual's existing investments and estimated rate of return. Based on these inputs, it calculates the monthly SIP needed to reach the desired retirement corpus within a specific timeframe.
This can give investors a clearer picture of whether their current savings strategy is aligned with their long-term goals or if adjustments are required.
A Planning Tool, Not A Guarantee:
Experts caution that these figures should be viewed as planning estimates rather than promises. Market returns, inflation, healthcare expenses, and lifestyle changes can all affect retirement outcomes.
As Udayan Adhye's illustration shows, successful retirement planning is less about chasing a magic number and more about understanding how time and inflation shape the true cost of financial freedom.
