People feel offended when others say hurtful or offensive words to them. It is natural to feel offended, but motivational speaker Sadhguru has a very effective way of dealing with a situation of being offended. As per him, it is not the words that offend us; it is the way we accept the words in our hearts and minds.
Hurtful Words Only Hurt If You Let Them
Sadhguru gives a simple but perceptive example. He says, "Imagine I call you an idiot. You can't sleep for three nights just because of one word. If this one word disturbs you for days, then maybe you really are being an idiot." His point is not to make fun but to show how the problem lies not with the word but with how much power you give to it.
Words Reflect the Speaker, Not You
He continues to explain that individuals speak according to what they know. An individual who knows good things will speak good. An individual who is full of negativity will speak negatively. Their words reveal something about them, not about you. But most people let these negative words determine how they feel about themselves.
Take Charge of Your Inner Response
Sadhguru encourages people to empower themselves to master their responses. Rather than surrendering to anger, we can remain calm and not allow other people's words to disturb our peace. Ultimately, our responses to other people's words are a choice that we have. When we stop giving others the power to hurt us with their words, we become truly free.
