Monsoon may bring cooler weather and cosy evenings, but it can also wreak havoc on your hair. Increased humidity often leads to frizz, scalp issues and excessive hair fall. To tackle these seasonal concerns, nutritionist and wellness influencer Rujuta Diwekar recently shared a traditional hair care routine rooted in Indian wisdom. From a protein-packed kulith soup to natural hair cleansers and seasonal fruits, her suggestions focus on nourishing hair from the inside out.

Kulith Soup: The Traditional Hair-Strengthening Recipe

At the heart of Rujuta's monsoon hair care routine is kulith, also known as horse gram. She describes it as the “OG plant protein” that's naturally rich in iron, calcium and fibre.

The recipe is simple. Soak horse gram for a few hours, pressure cook it, and grind it with chilli and garlic. Boil the mixture with water and finish it with a tadka of cumin and garlic. Those avoiding garlic can replace it with black pepper and a pinch of hing.

According to Rujuta, replacing one daily cup of tea or coffee with kulith soup may help improve iron and calcium absorption, which are essential nutrients for healthy hair growth and strength.

Why Kulith Is Good For Hair Health:

The nutritionist explains that hair fall is often linked to nutritional deficiencies, fatigue and hormonal changes. Kulith has long been used in traditional Indian diets to support overall health and recovery.

She says it is commonly recommended for breastfeeding women experiencing post-pregnancy hair fall and can also help women dealing with heavy bleeding during perimenopause or menopause. By supporting the body's nutritional needs, kulith may help maintain stronger, healthier hair.

Reetha: The Natural Alternative To Shampoo

Apart from diet, Rujuta recommends switching to reetha or soapnut for hair cleansing during the rainy season.

To prepare it, soak reetha, boil it overnight, and store the liquid after it cools. The natural lather can then be used as a shampoo.

According to Rujuta, reetha is free from harsh chemicals and may help improve scalp health, reduce dandruff and add natural shine and volume to hair. She also suggests using reetha water as a final rinse after regular shampooing.

Don't Ignore Seasonal Kharik:

The final recommendation is kharik, or fresh seasonal dates. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols, these fruits may help combat oxidative stress, one of the factors linked to hair thinning and premature greying.

Rujuta believes that regular consumption of kharik can help preserve hair density and volume while supporting overall well-being.

A Natural Monsoon Hair Care Plan:

Instead of relying solely on expensive hair treatments, Rujuta's approach focuses on simple kitchen ingredients and traditional remedies. From sipping warm kulith soup to washing hair with reetha and adding seasonal kharik to the diet, these time-tested practices may help keep hair healthier, stronger and more manageable throughout the monsoon.
