  • Match HUID, purity, photo, and weight before buying
  • New checks aim to curb gold scams and fraud

Imagine spending lakhs on a gold necklace, verifying its HUID number, and still ending up with jewellery that isn't what you paid for. As shocking as it sounds, cases involving fake hallmarking and counterfeit HUID numbers have been reported across several Indian cities, leaving buyers vulnerable to fraud.

Finance influencer Neha Nagar recently highlighted an important update from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) that could make gold buying significantly safer for consumers.

The Loophole That Enabled Gold Frauds:

Until now, buyers could use the BIS Care App to verify a jewellery item's Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number. If the number was valid, many consumers assumed their purchase was genuine. However, there was a crucial gap in the verification process.

While the app confirmed HUID details, it did not allow buyers to compare the actual jewellery piece with registered information such as its photograph and exact weight. This created an opportunity for fraudsters to copy a genuine HUID onto a different jewellery item with lower purity or altered specifications. As a result, consumers could unknowingly purchase gold that did not match the certified product.

What BIS Has Changed:

To improve transparency and strengthen consumer protection, BIS is enhancing its verification system. Along with HUID and purity details, the system will now provide the jewellery's photograph and weight information. This means buyers can compare multiple data points before making a purchase. The added information makes it much harder for counterfeit jewellery to be passed off as authentic hallmark-certified gold.

How Buyers Should Verify Gold:

According to Neha Nagar, consumers should avoid relying solely on HUID validation.

Before purchasing gold, make sure to verify:

  • HUID number
  • Gold purity
  • Jewellery photograph
  • Weight details

All four details should match the product being purchased.

Even a small discrepancy could indicate a potential issue that requires further verification from the jeweller.

Why This Update Matters:

Gold remains one of India's most trusted investment and gifting assets. With prices reaching record highs, the financial impact of gold fraud can be substantial. The new BIS verification process adds an extra layer of security and helps buyers make informed decisions.

A Simple Check Can Save Lakhs:

As gold scams become increasingly sophisticated, awareness is the best defense. The next time you buy gold, don't stop at checking whether the HUID is valid. Match the HUID, purity, photograph, and weight details as well. That simple habit could protect your hard-earned money and ensure you're getting exactly what you paid for.
