Navratri is more than a festival of devotion. It is considered a powerful spiritual period when devotees seek to elevate their consciousness, strengthen their inner energy and connect with the divine feminine. According to astro influencer Bhavesh Bhimanathani, one of the most significant rituals of Navratri is Kalash Sthapna, a sacred practice that marks the beginning of nine days of worship dedicated to Maa Durga.
Spiritual Significance:
Kalash Sthapna, also known as Ghatasthapana, symbolizes the invocation of Maa Durga into the sacred space of the home or temple. The ritual is performed with the belief that the goddess resides in the Kalash during the nine days of Navratri, blessing devotees with positivity, strength and spiritual growth.
Bhavesh Bhimanathani explains that devotees perform tapas and prayers during this period to attain higher states of consciousness and invite divine energy into their lives.
Preparing For Kalash Sthapna:
Before establishing the Kalash, the worship area should be thoroughly cleaned and purified. Sprinkling Ganga Jal around the sacred space is considered auspicious. The temple or altar should be placed at eye level and maintained with cleanliness throughout the festival.
A pure and organized prayer area is believed to create the right environment for spiritual practices and daily worship.
Steps To Perform The Ritual:
The ritual begins with a mud Kalash wrapped with a mauli. The Kalash is then filled with water and sacred ingredients such as turmeric, cloves, cardamom and coins. Flowers are added before placing five mango leaves decorated with haldi and kumkum on the opening.
A coconut is then placed on top with its head facing upward and covered with a chunni. The Kalash is traditionally placed on a bed of rice. Devotees may also place idols of Maa Durga, Maa Kali, Maa Lakshmi and Maa Saraswati near the setup.
Maintaining an Akhand Jyoti throughout Navratri is considered highly auspicious. The Kalash should ideally be positioned in the north-east direction of the temple.
Invoking Divine Energy:
After the setup is complete, devotees pray to Maa Durga and request her to accept their prayers and reside within the Kalash for the nine sacred days. The ritual is not only seen as an act of worship but also as a spiritual commitment to discipline, devotion and self-transformation during Navratri.
As Navratri 2026 approaches, Bhavesh Bhimanathani encourages devotees to perform Kalash Sthapna with sincerity and faith to make the most of this spiritually charged period.
