When people think of wellness travel, they often imagine yoga sessions, herbal teas, and relaxing massages. But what if a trip to an Ayurveda clinic introduced you to a centuries-old practice that involves inhaling medicinal smoke?
That is exactly what surprised travel influencer Shenaz Treasury during a recent wellness experience. Sharing her reaction on social media, Shenaz revealed that she was introduced to Dhumapana, an ancient Ayurvedic therapy often referred to as medicated smoking. The experience left her both curious and amazed.
An Unexpected Ayurveda Experience:
Shenaz admitted that she was taken aback when an Ayurvedic doctor recommended the practice as part of a treatment plan. "What?! Smoking is part of Ayurvedic Treatment? This is medicated smoking," she shared, adding that she was equally surprised to learn more about the therapy.
According to traditional Ayurveda, Dhumapana involves inhaling smoke generated from specific medicinal herbs. Unlike tobacco smoking, this practice is designed for therapeutic purposes and is administered under professional guidance.
What Is Dhumapana?
Dhumapana is an ancient Ayurvedic procedure that has been mentioned in classical texts for centuries. The therapy traditionally involves herbal preparations that are burned, with the smoke being inhaled in a controlled manner. Historically, it has been used for certain conditions related to the head, nose, and throat. Different herbal combinations may be prescribed depending on an individual's condition and wellness goals.
However, experts stress that this is not a self-treatment method. The therapy should only be undertaken under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
Why Wellness Travellers Are Drawn To Ayurveda:
India's Ayurveda retreats continue to attract travellers from across the world seeking holistic healing experiences. From Panchakarma therapies and herbal treatments to mindful eating and meditation, these retreats offer visitors a chance to explore ancient wellness traditions firsthand.
For travel enthusiasts like Shenaz Treasury, such experiences often become an opportunity to discover lesser-known healing practices that challenge conventional perceptions of health and wellness.
More Than A Travel Memory:
What makes Shenaz's experience memorable is the element of surprise. Most visitors do not expect to encounter a therapy involving medicinal smoke at a wellness centre. "Still, I did NOT expect to do this at an Ayurveda clinic!" she wrote.
Her experience serves as a reminder that travel is not always about discovering new places. Sometimes, it is about uncovering ancient traditions and wellness practices that have quietly existed for generations, offering a fresh perspective on health, culture, and mindful living.
