In an exclusive conversation with Jayveer Singh, Nikhil Paralikar, aka thetablaguy, opened up about his journey in the industry. He highlighted his challenges and how content creation helped him become a known face.
Excerpts...
What inspired you to choose the username 'The Tabla Guy'?
To be honest, I thought it sounded cool and unique. It was just an idea that popped into my head, and I thought it would be a great way to brand myself. And now, it's become a recognizable name in the music industry.
Tabla is a traditional form of music, often associated with classical Indian music. How did this transition from traditional to modern music?
I believe tabla is a vast subject that can be explored in many ways. While it's rooted in classical music, it can also be played with various genres like electronic, jazz, and rock. I started experimenting and improvising, and that's how I discovered my unique sound.
Your recent release, "Vada," is an amalgamation of modernity and traditionality. Can you walk us through your thought process when combining these elements in your music?
To be frank, there isn't a specific thought process. I listen to the composition a few times, sit with it for a while, and then try to play something around it with my tabla. Somehow, it just fits well. I feel it's something magical that happens from within.
Do you have a special name for your tabla?
No, I haven't named my tabla yet.
In today's digital age, social media plays a crucial role in promoting one's work. What's your take on content creation?
I think content creation has made it easier for musicians to reach a wider audience. Social media platforms have been instrumental in promoting artists worldwide. I believe content creation is now a part of a musician's discipline, and if done regularly, it can help them reach more people and gain recognition.
You've been on this journey for 8 years now. How do you look back on your experiences?
My journey has been beautiful, with its ups and downs. Like every artist, I've had my share of doubts about how long I'll survive in this industry. But I've been fortunate to have overcome many challenges and come out stronger. I'm grateful for that.
