For centuries, rudraksha beads have been an important part of India's spiritual and yogic traditions. Worn by sages, yogis and devotees, rudraksha is often regarded as more than a spiritual accessory. Many believe it supports emotional balance, promotes inner stability, and helps create a sense of protection in everyday life.
In one of his Instagram videos, Sadhguru shared insights into why rudraksha has traditionally been worn and how it is believed to influence a person's energy and wellbeing.
Enhancing Your Energy Field:
According to Sadhguru, one of the primary reasons people wear rudraksha is its connection to the body's energy field. He said, “Why rudraksha is worn on the body is, one thing is it enhances the aura.”
In yogic traditions, the aura is often described as an energetic field surrounding an individual. A balanced and stable aura is believed to support emotional clarity, mental peace and resilience against negativity. For those seeking spiritual growth, this belief serves as a reminder to stay grounded and centered, regardless of external circumstances.
A Spiritual Companion for Life's Journey:
Modern life often requires people to constantly move between places, environments, and situations. Sadhguru explained that rudraksha has traditionally been worn by travelling ascetics for this reason.
He said, “Another reason why it's worn by Indian sadhus and mendicants is, they're constantly traveling. One who is constantly eating and sleeping in different places, his body goes through a certain level of destabilization. So, person who is constantly traveling wears a rudraksh so that he has a cocoon of his own energy, that the outside energies does not disturb him.”
The deeper motivational lesson here is the importance of maintaining inner balance even when life feels uncertain. Whether it is changing jobs, moving cities or dealing with daily stress, creating a strong inner foundation can help a person navigate challenges more effectively.
The Traditional Belief About Detecting Poison:
Sadhguru also spoke about an age-old belief associated with rudraksha.
He said, “One more reason why people wear this is, if you were thirsty and you're walking in a jungle, you found little water, you drink it, you could be poisoned. If you just hold your rudraksh above the water, it will tell you whether to drink or not. Even if there is a tiny bit of poison in it, instantly it will go anti-clockwise.”
However, it is important to note that this is a traditional spiritual belief and has not been scientifically validated. Experts advise relying on modern water testing and purification methods for safety.
Calm Mind, Stronger Life:
Sadhguru also highlighted the calming effects traditionally associated with rudraksha. He said, “It brings down the blood pressure in your system, your nerves will be calm, all these kind of things.” He further added, “Today doctors are prescribing rudraksh in India for hypertension, cardiac…”
While many people report feeling calmer when wearing rudraksha, there is currently no strong scientific evidence proving that it can treat hypertension or heart-related conditions. Still, the symbolic message remains powerful: true wellbeing begins with cultivating calmness, mindfulness and inner strength.
A Reminder to Stay Grounded:
Beyond beliefs and traditions, rudraksha continues to inspire millions as a symbol of spiritual awareness and self-discipline. Whether worn for faith, meditation or personal motivation, it serves as a reminder that lasting peace often comes from within and that a balanced mind can be one of life's greatest strengths.
