Afternoon naps can be a refreshing way to recharge, but are they really good for us? Let's explore this with the wisdom of Ayurveda, as described by famous holistic yoga teacher Greesha Dhingra.
Afternoon Nap in Ayurveda
Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, emphasizes the importance of aligning activities, including sleep, to our body type and natural cycles. In Ayurveda, afternoon napping or "daydreaming" is considered helpful when done properly.
Who Should Sleep?
Hyperactive individuals (Vata & Pitta): If you are constantly on the go, working in a stressful environment, or doing strenuous physical activity, afternoon naps can help restore your balance.
Infirmities or Diseases: Pregnant women, individuals recovering from illness, or those with vitamin deficiencies can benefit from a short nap.
How to Nap the Right Way?
- Duration: Sleep for 20 to 30 minutes to ensure freshness and to avoid feeling slow.
- Time: Sleep during Vata, preferably between 2:00 and 6:00 pm, to help your body repair its damage and increase energy.
- Avoid Heavy Meals: Heavy meals before bedtime can upset digestion and can affect sleep quality. Stick to light meals if necessary.
- Limit Caffeine: Caffeine during the day can interfere with your nap and overall sleep cycle. It's best to avoid it.
- Kapha Body Traits: Sleeping may not be the best option if you are lazy and lethargic, as it can exacerbate these tendencies and affect food intake.
- Meditate Instead: If you want to recharge without impacting your ability to sleep at night, try a 15-minute meditation body check.
Following these Ayurvedic suggestions will allow you to get the advantages of daytime naps while also promoting balance, rejuvenation, and overall health.
