Parenting expert Ambika Agarwal sits down for an exclusive conversation with Jayveer Singh, sharing the heartfelt journey behind her content creation. She opens up about the inspiration that led her to focus on parenting topics, from confronting sensitive issues like child shaming to emphasizing the value of building friendships with your children.
Excerpts...
When we talk about academics, we often hear parents bashing their kids or comparing them. What advice would you give to such parents?
That's a beautiful question.. The root issue is external validation. Parents often push kids to perform for exams because they think the teacher's evaluation defines their worth. If a teacher says, “you don't know it,” you start believing you don't. Children then grow up seeking validation outside. Parents should instead help them trust themselves, if they lack something, work on it, but don't attach self-worth to marks or approval. Don't teach kids to seek validation; it makes them dependent on others' opinions for both praise and criticism.
Many believe parents should be friends with their kids. How do you maintain a balance between being friendly and being strict?
You shouldn't treat your child like a king or like a subordinate. Maintain balance. Let them decide small things (like clothes or toothpaste), but as a parent, you set boundaries for important things like screen time or junk food. Family rules should apply to everyone.
There's a current trend: “Don't hit kids.” Some say mild hitting shows love or discipline. What's your take?
I don't support hitting at all. It may work once or twice, but over time, it stops working and leaves emotional trauma. You can't earn respect through fear.
Then how can parents discipline kids without punishment?
I prefer consequences, not punishment. For example, if the rule is one hour of screen time and the child exceeds it, then the next day there's no screen time. The child may cry, but you stay emotionally available while enforcing boundaries.
How has motherhood changed you personally?
Completely. I was naïve and unaware before becoming a mother. My son has transformed me into a more conscious, patient, and empathetic person.
What's one parenting myth you want to bust?
That too much love spoils kids. Showing affection doesn't spoil them, it makes them secure. The key is balance, not suppression of love.
Have you ever faced judgment from family for your content, especially when sharing personal stories?
No, because I communicate respectfully and never name anyone. My family and I have open conversations, so there's mutual understanding.
One message for parents?
Don't get affected by judgment. No one's perfect. Embrace your imperfections and keep learning every day.
And one message for aspiring mom content creators?
Be authentic. Don't copy others. Consistency matters, try posting one or two pieces of content every week.
