  • Failed UPI and ATM transactions may attract compensation
  • Customers get protection if fraud is reported quickly
  • Banks cannot force unwanted financial products

Most people assume that once they open a bank account, the rules are entirely in the bank's hands. But what many customers do not realise is that several Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations are designed to protect consumers and, in some cases, even compensate them when banks fail to meet service standards.

Finance influencer CA Sarthak Ahuja recently highlighted a few lesser-known banking rules that every customer should know. These provisions can help account holders recover money, avoid unfair charges and hold banks accountable when services fall short.

Failed Transactions Can Cost Banks Money:

If a UPI payment or ATM transaction fails and the debited amount is not reversed within the prescribed timeline, customers may be entitled to compensation. According to the rule highlighted by CA Sarthak Ahuja, banks are required to compensate customers with ₹100 per day for delays beyond the allowed period. Many users are unaware of this provision and therefore never follow up on pending reversals.

Fraud Reports Offer Strong Protection:

Financial fraud remains a major concern for banking customers. However, if an account holder reports an unauthorised transaction within three days, their liability can be significantly reduced or even become zero, subject to applicable RBI guidelines. An important aspect of the rule is that the burden of proving negligence does not automatically fall on the customer. Banks must assess and establish whether the customer acted carelessly.

Minimum Balance Charges Have Limits:

Many customers worry about penalties when their account balance drops below the required minimum level. RBI regulations ensure that banks cannot impose charges so excessive that the account balance turns negative solely because of non-maintenance penalties. This safeguard prevents customers from falling into a cycle of mounting penalties and negative balances.

Loan Documents Must Be Returned Promptly:

Customers who have fully repaid their home or property-backed loans should not have to wait endlessly for their original documents. As highlighted by CA Sarthak Ahuja, banks are expected to return original property papers within a stipulated period after loan closure. Delays can attract compensation payable to the customer.

Watch Out For Unwanted Add-Ons:

Many account holders notice annual deductions linked to insurance or financial products they do not remember purchasing. RBI has tightened norms around such practices, making customer consent a key requirement. Banks cannot automatically bundle third-party financial products with accounts without the customer's approval.

Customer Service Matters Too:

Another lesser-known rule relates to branch operations. Customers cannot be denied service during working hours because staff members are on lunch breaks. Bank employees are expected to manage breaks in rotation to ensure customer service remains uninterrupted. Knowing these rules can help customers protect their money, avoid unnecessary charges and ensure they receive the services they are entitled to.
