Shravan is more than just a month of fasting and prayer. In Hindu traditions, it is viewed as a spiritually charged period when people slow down, turn inward, and deepen their connection with the divine. According to astro influencer Parveen Sharma, the observance of Shravan Vrats is not merely about abstaining from food but about cultivating discipline, devotion, and self-awareness.
Ancient scriptures such as the Dharma Shastras and Puranas describe a Vrat as an act of inner Tapasya, where one offers ego, desires, and restlessness into the fire of discipline. During Shravan, devotees observe several important fasts dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and other divine energies.
Somvar Vrat:
One of the most widely observed fasts during Shravan is the Somvar Vrat, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed to strengthen mental clarity, emotional balance, and inner resolve.
According to the North Indian calendar, Somvar Vrats fall on August 3, 10, 17, and 24. In the South Indian calendar, devotees will observe them on August 17, 24, 31, and September 7.
Many devotees visit Shiva temples, perform Rudrabhishek, and chant Shiva mantras on these Mondays.
Pradosh Vrat:
Pradosh Vrat is considered particularly significant for karmic cleansing and spiritual growth. Observed during the twilight period, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
This year, devotees will observe Som Pradosh on August 10 and Bhaum Pradosh on August 25. Spiritual practitioners believe that sincere prayers on these days can help reduce negative karmic influences and bring inner peace.
Shravan Shivratri:
Among all Shravan observances, Shravan Shivratri holds a special place for Shiva devotees. Falling on August 11, the sacred occasion is associated with deep meditation, prayers, and spiritual evolution.
Many devotees stay awake through the night, perform special pujas, and chant "Om Namah Shivaya" to seek Lord Shiva's blessings.
Mangala Gauri Vrat:
Dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Mangala Gauri Vrat is observed primarily by women seeking prosperity, happiness, and divine blessings.
According to the North Indian calendar, the vrat will be observed on August 4, 11, 18, and 25. In the South Indian calendar, it falls on August 18, 25, September 1, and September 8.
Devotees offer flowers, sweets, and prayers to the goddess while seeking harmony in family life.
Naag Panchami Vrat:
Naag Panchami, observed on August 17, is dedicated to the worship of serpent deities. The festival symbolises respect for nature, protection, fertility, and spiritual energies associated with serpents.
Devotees visit temples, offer milk and prayers, and seek blessings for prosperity and well-being.
Fasting Guidance:
Parveen Sharma suggests that devotees keep their fasting routine simple and mindful. The day before a Vrat, one should ideally eat a light sattvic meal before sunset. On the fasting day, fruits, alkaline vegetables, herbal teas, and water are commonly consumed. After sunset or the completion of the puja, the fast can be broken with a light and easily digestible meal.
For many devotees, Shravan is not just a religious observance but an opportunity to realign the mind, body, and spirit through devotion, discipline, and self-reflection.
