Karwa Chauth is one of the most cherished festivals observed by married women across India, but this year, the festival arrives with an added spiritual significance. Falling on October 29, 2026, Karwa Chauth coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi, a day dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Karwa Chauth is primarily dedicated to the devotion and well-being of one's spouse. On this day, women worship Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya. Goddess Parvati, regarded as the embodiment of eternal marital bliss, is worshipped first, followed by reverence to Goddess Gaura and Chauth Mata, both considered manifestations of the divine feminine. The observance symbolises love, commitment and faith while strengthening spiritual bonds within the family.

Rituals To Follow:

The day begins with a sacred sankalp, or vow, taken after the morning bath. Women resolve to observe the fast for the welfare, health and longevity of their husbands and loved ones. The fast is traditionally observed without consuming food or water until moonrise. Throughout the day, devotees engage in prayers, meditation and spiritual reflection.

In the evening, the Karwa Chauth Puja is performed during Sandhya Kaal. Images or idols of Goddess Gaura and Chauth Mata are worshipped along with offerings of flowers, sweets and prayers.

Importance Of The Karwa:

A significant part of the ritual is the offering of the Karwa, a sacred pot filled with water or milk along with coins, precious items or symbolic offerings. This Karwa is often donated to a Brahmin or a married woman as an act of devotion and charity.

Moon Worship And Fast Breaking:

The most awaited moment of Karwa Chauth arrives with the sighting of the moon. Devotees offer prayers to Chandra Dev and seek blessings for happiness and longevity. After completing the rituals and offering arghya to the moon, the fast is traditionally broken. According to Parveen Sharma, observing the festival with sincerity, gratitude and devotion is believed to invite divine blessings, harmony and lasting prosperity into one's life.
