- Banks must publish FD rates daily by 10 AM
- Same deposit, same day, same FD rate across branches
- New RBI rules bring greater transparency for FD investors
Imagine walking into two branches of the same bank on the same day and being offered different fixed deposit rates for the exact same amount. Under the latest RBI guidelines, that inconsistency is set to change. For retail investors, the new rules are all about transparency, fairness, and making FD rates easier to track and compare.
Finance influencer CA Sakchi Jain recently highlighted the key updates and explained what they mean for everyday savers.
What Has Changed For FD Investors:
Under the new framework, banks will be required to publish their fixed deposit interest rates on their websites every business day by 10 AM, with a limited grace period allowed for updates. More importantly, the interest rate displayed for the day must be honoured throughout that business day. This means customers can make more informed decisions without worrying about sudden, unexplained changes in rates during the day.
The move is expected to make FD rate comparison much simpler for depositors across India.
Same Deposit, Same Rate:
One of the biggest changes relates to uniformity in pricing. Banks can no longer offer different interest rates on similar deposits opened on the same day simply because they were booked at different branches. If two customers invest the same amount in the same tenure on the same day, they should receive the same interest rate regardless of which branch they visit.
According to CA Sakchi Jain, this change removes confusion and creates a more transparent system for retail depositors.
What About Large Deposits?
The RBI has allowed greater flexibility for bulk deposits above ₹3 crore. Banks can continue to determine rates differently for these larger deposits based on their policies and funding requirements. However, this exemption primarily impacts high-value depositors and institutional investors rather than typical retail customers.
Why This Matters To You:
For most FD investors, the actual return on deposits may not change dramatically because of these rules. The bigger benefit lies in improved transparency. Investors will now find it easier to compare rates across banks, verify published information, and make better financial decisions without worrying about branch-level variations.
A Positive Step For Savers:
The new RBI rules aim to create a more transparent fixed deposit ecosystem where information is readily available and rates remain consistent for similar deposits. As CA Sakchi Jain points out, anyone planning an FD in the coming months should make it a habit to compare rates carefully, as banks will now be required to display them more clearly than before.
