Bhakti artist and kirtan singer Premanjali Dasi is redefining devotional music for a new generation. Raised in Australia and deeply connected to India's spiritual traditions, she blends sacred mantras with contemporary sounds to create music that inspires healing, reflection, and inner growth. In this exclusive conversation with Jayveer Singh, she shares her spiritual journey, the power of kirtan, and how devotion continues to shape her life and music.
Excerpts...
What inspired you to blend traditional kirtan with modern music?
Growing up, I always felt like I was living between two worlds. My life was heavily influenced by Indian culture, but I was still in Australia. I listened to a wide variety of music styles, so when it came time to write my own music, that blend came out naturally. It also offers a new way to experience traditional bhajans and, hopefully, makes them more accessible to people around the world.

How did your journey from Australia to India shape your spiritual path?
Traveling to India gave me the opportunity to connect with many amazing teachers and gurus. It also allowed me to go on pilgrimages to many beautiful sacred places. Those experiences and samskaras have had, and continue to have, a profound impact on my heart and mind.
Your music talks about healing and self-discovery. What do those concepts mean to you personally?
To me, self-discovery means constantly being open to change and new ideas about myself. It means never allowing my opinions to become stagnant, being willing to learn, embracing new experiences, and continually challenging my own beliefs about myself and the world.
Why do you think devotional music is connecting with a global audience today ?
Everyone is going through something. We all face our own challenges and need ways to cope with them. The media and modern society often present partying, drugs, and alcohol as solutions, but these can lead to many negative consequences. Devotional music offers comfort, support, and a healthy way to express emotions and feel heard. I think many people are finding in devotional music what they have always been searching for, which is why it continues to resonate with a growing global audience.

How has travel influenced your music and personal growth?
I am who I am today largely because of the travel experiences I've had. The people I've met have inspired me, challenged me, and helped me move closer to my goals. Traveling also allowed me to attend many music events, which broadened my understanding of the industry and deepened my appreciation for the performing arts.
Tell us about your latest track, 'Out of My Mind'. What's the emotion behind it?
'Out of My Mind' is about how easy it is to chase superficial validation and success, and how unsatisfying those things can be once you achieve them. The song explores the idea that there is something deeper within all of us that can bring genuine fulfillment—if we are willing to search for it. It is also an ode to letting go of old, unhelpful habits and stepping into the life you truly want to live, without looking back.
What kind of transformation do you hope listeners experience through your music?
I hope people feel inspired. That has always been my favorite takeaway from listening to my own favorite artists. Whether they feel inspired to sing, pray, or take the next step in their lives, I would consider that a success.
For someone feeling lost or overwhelmed, where should they begin their healing journey?
The first thing I do in these situations is sit alone in a safe space and pray. Sometimes that prayer is silent; sometimes it takes the form of singing or journaling, whatever feels most authentic in that moment. The goal is simply to release the initial emotion. I'm also a strong advocate for japa meditation. It is similar to kirtan but practiced privately, where you softly chant a mantra to yourself. It feels almost like a personal conversation with Krishna. I find this practice to be one of the best ways to share my heart daily and keep my mind at peace.
