- Why do you feel sad on your birthday?
- Five reasons why birthdays can bring sadness rather than joy.
- You secretly hope others will remember
Not everyone is happy on their birthday. Although It is supposed to be a wonderful day, many people feel empty, lonely, or even sad. If this is how you generally feel, you're not alone. Psychologist Princy Saini shares five reasons why.
5 Reasons Why You Feel Sad on Your Birthday
1. You hope secretly that others will remember
You can say you don't care about birthdays, but secretly you want someone to remember and make a big deal over you like you are important. When it doesn't happen, it hurts. It makes you feel like you don't matters to anyone, like you're invisible.
2. Negative childhood memories
Sometimes the birthdays in the past did not turn out well. Perhaps you were ignored or something unpleasant occurred. Now every birthday brings back memories of those bad times. Even though life is now better, the mind recalls the pain.
3. Feeling trapped in life
Another reason you feel sad on your birthday is that it reminds you that time passing. You think about why you're not where you had envisioned to be. You feel like you should have done more or been more successful by now.
4. You don't like being in the spotlight
You can get anxious or uncomfortable when you are in the spotlight. This is perhaps due to childhood learning to keep quiet or in the shadows. Today, you are afraid of attention rather than enjoying it.
5. Fear of getting older
Every birthday makes you remember that you are aging. And for some people, that is closer to death. That can be a scary thought, even if everything else is fine.
It is more normal to be sad on your birthday than people think. It does not mean something is wrong with you. It is the beginning to understand why you feel that way. Be nice to yourself, and remember that your feelings are valid.
