Petrol Pump Scam Warning: Tejas Joshi Reveals Credit Card Danger

Cybersecurity expert and digital finance educator Tejas Joshi has raised some serious concerns about a growing credit card fraud tactic widely spreading across petrol pumps all-over India.

According to Tejas, scammers are highly exploiting unsuspecting customers by installing skimming devices on the card machines at fuel stations, copying sensitive card information during some transactions.

How the Scam Works

These skimming devices are quite small and discreet add-ons attached to POS terminals. When a customer swipes or inserts their card, the skimmer discreetly copies the card's magnetic strip data. 

In some cases, often the fraudsters even install miniature cameras nearby to record the PIN entries, making it easier to clone cards and access the funds.

The Real Danger: International Fraud

Tejas highlights that once the card data is stolen, it's often used for some unauthorized transactions on international platforms, where two-factor authentication and local banking security measures may not fully apply. 

Victims often only realize the fraud after the money's completely gone, making recovery very difficult.

How to Protect Yourself

• Always use contactless payments (tap-to-pay) whenever it's possible.
• Inspect the card machine well for any loose parts or even suspicious attachments.
• Always shield your PIN when entering it.
• Monitor your bank statements on a regular basis.
• Use credit cards instead of debit cards for the added fraud protection.
