- Ankur Warikoo prioritises investing before spending
- The couple spends on experiences, not luxury
- No budget limits for learning and self-growth
What if financial success wasn't about owning the most expensive car or flaunting luxury brands? What if true wealth meant having the freedom to spend your time exactly how you want? Finance influencer and entrepreneur Ankur Warikoo recently shared the money principles he and his wife follow as parents of two children, offering a refreshing perspective on personal finance, investing, and mindful spending.
Rather than focusing on looking rich, the couple prioritises building long-term wealth, experiences, and personal growth.
Wealth Over Status:
One of the biggest financial rules followed by Ankur and his wife is not spending money to impress others. According to him, the goal is to become wealthy, not appear wealthy. Instead of owning a car, they rent one whenever required. They own the home they live in but have chosen not to invest in multiple properties. The family also avoids spending on luxury brands or status symbols purely for social validation.
For them, financial freedom matters far more than maintaining appearances.
Investing In Health:
While they are cautious about unnecessary spending, there is one area where they never compromise: food. Ankur believes that good health is the greatest form of wealth and that quality nutrition deserves priority. While healthy food often comes at a premium price, the couple views it as an investment rather than an expense.
In a world where convenience often takes precedence over nutrition, their approach highlights the importance of taking care of one's body for the long term.
Memories Over Material Things:
Another important money rule in their household is spending on experiences instead of accumulating possessions. Ankur believes experiences create lasting memories and contribute to personal growth, whereas material possessions offer only temporary happiness. The couple travelled for an impressive 116 days last year, choosing to invest in meaningful moments and family memories rather than acquiring more things.
According to him, experiences help people evolve, learn, and become better versions of themselves.
Investing First, Spending Later:
Perhaps the most significant financial habit they follow is paying themselves first. As soon as salaries are credited, a major portion is directed towards investments. Daily expenses are managed using whatever remains after investing. Ankur revealed that towards the end of the month, they had only ₹9,000 and ₹600 left in their respective bank accounts because the rest had already been invested.
This disciplined approach ensures wealth creation remains a priority.
Learning Without Limits:
Education and self-improvement have no spending cap in their household. Whether it is books, courses, hobbies, or skill-building activities, the family sees learning as a lifelong investment. Ankur shared that his wife Ruchi is currently learning pottery, watercolour painting, and tennis, while their children also participate in various learning programs and classes.
Ultimately, Ankur's message is simple: every family should create its own money rules. The specifics may differ, but having a clear philosophy around spending, saving, investing, and learning can help build a more meaningful and financially secure life.
